For HW10, you are sending me your thesis and outline for Paper 4: Informal Argument. First, you’ll need to read Then, study the following files:
Overview and How to Write an Informal Argument
Steps 1 and 2: Exploring the Informal Argument
Step 3: Creating the Informal Argument Thesis
Step 4: Organizing the Informal Argument and Creating Strong Body Paragraphs
Once you have studied these files, create your own thesis for Paper 4. Remember to include the topic and a comment (your opinion and your “points”). This is discussed fully in the above files, so I will not repeat myself here.
After you create your thesis, write a plan (an informal outline). This is just a list of topics your essay will address in your body paragraphs. Below is an example from the file Step 4: Organizing the Informal Argument; although the example refers to a different author’s claims about advertising, I think you’ll get the idea.
Thesis: Author Jib Fowles is correct; advertisers try to entice consumers through the “appeal to the need for aggression” (417). (topic) In response to our current economic recession, Jack-in-the-Box, Cheetos and Domino’s are all taking advantage of tensions between the middle class and upper class to sell their products. (comment)
Plan (Informal Outline)
Introduction with Thesis
Body Para. 1: Ads for Jack-in-the-Box –use the appeal to the need for aggression
Body Para. 2: Cheetos commercials and tensions between the middle and upper classes
Body Para. 3: Domino’s pizza ads and the feelings of aggression average consumers
Of course, there are many, many options–I’m confident that with some brainstorming, you’ll come up with a GREAT thesis and plan!
